BUILT AROUND YOUR HOME
Plastering with care and attention.
Good plastering makes all the difference to a room. Speak to us about plastering as part of your next home improvement project.
Plastering is one of those jobs you notice most when it is done badly. A smooth, flat finish on walls and ceilings makes decorating easier and gives a room a clean, finished look.
We carry out interior plastering on walls and ceilings, including repairs and finishes as part of renovation and home improvement projects. Because we also handle general building, plastering can be combined with other work on your home to keep things simple.
Plastering usually happens after first-fix electrics and plumbing and before decorating, so it is worth planning it into the order of a renovation. New plaster also needs time to dry out fully before painting, and a mist coat helps paint bond to the fresh surface.
Tell us about the room or rooms you are working on and we will give you a quote.
Skim coat or full replaster?
Not every wall needs the same treatment. Where the existing plaster is sound and firmly attached but marked, uneven or patched, a skim coat, a thin finishing layer, can give a smooth, flat surface ready for decorating. Skimming is also how new plasterboard is finished.
Where plaster is loose, hollow, cracked through or damaged by alterations, it usually needs stripping back and replacing with backing coats and a finish. That takes longer and costs more, but skimming over failing plaster simply hides the problem for a while. We check the condition of walls and ceilings at the visit and explain which approach suits each room.
Drying times and decorating
Fresh plaster has to dry fully before it is painted. A thin skim dries faster than a full replaster, and warmth and ventilation make a big difference, so drying is slower in cold, damp weather. A wall is ready when it has turned an even pale colour all over with no darker patches, and the first coat should be a thinned mist coat rather than ordinary emulsion.
Planning the drying time into your project avoids decorating too soon. Our guide to how long plaster takes to dry covers what affects drying, how to tell a wall is ready and what to avoid.

QUESTIONS
Plastering: common questions
Do you plaster as part of wider renovation work?
Yes. Plastering is often part of our general building and home improvement projects.
Can you repair damaged plaster?
Yes, we carry out plastering repairs as well as full wall and ceiling finishes.
How soon can I paint new plaster?
Once it has dried to an even pale colour with no darker patches. How long that takes depends on thickness, season and ventilation. Start with a mist coat of thinned, non-vinyl matt emulsion.
